Admissions and Financial Prep

A Thoughtful, Grade-by-Grade Approach to College Planning

Each stage of middle and high school brings new opportunities and new questions. Families often consider how to plan early while also worrying about affordability, academic readiness and long-term fit. When admissions planning and financial considerations are approached together, the process feels clearer, more manageable and less stressful.

A year-by-year plan gives families direction without rushing. My work focuses on guiding students in building the academic skills, organization and confidence they need while helping families understand college options, costs and financial considerations early.

Rather than offering financial advice, I work with families make sense of the landscape and identify appropriate next steps. When planning is intentional and developmentally appropriate, students stay on track and parents feel reassured knowing each step is guided and supported.

Below is an overview of how I help families plan thoughtfully for both admissions and finances from middle school through senior year.

8th Grade: Early Awareness and Laying the Groundwork

Eighth grade is often a turning point. Academic expectations increase and gaps in organization, planning or follow-through that were manageable earlier can begin to require additional structure. This is an ideal time to strengthen foundational skills before high school demands grow.

Academic and Executive Function Coaching helps students build routines and habits that support independence and confidence.

Admissions Focus

  • Set small academic and personal goals to practice accountability and self-motivation

  • Build consistent study routines and reading and writing habits

  • Explore interests and early extracurricular ideas

  • Review upcoming high school course options

  • Visit local colleges or attend online information sessions

  • Use summer for enrichment, volunteering or new hobbies

Financial Focus

  • Begin open, low-pressure conversations about future college goals and costs

  • Introduce basic financial terms such as scholarships and financial aid

  • Begin small savings contributions or a 529 plan if appropriate

  • Track activities and achievements for future scholarship applications

9th Grade: Building the Academic and Extracurricular Foundation

Freshman year is about adjustment and exploration. Students learn how high school works while managing new expectations, faster pacing and increased independence.

Coaching supports students in building organization systems and routines that prevent small challenges from escalating unnecessarily.

Admissions Focus

  • Continue a thoughtful academic plan with appropriate course rigor

  • Develop reliable study habits and organizational systems

  • Get involved in meaningful extracurriculars and community service

  • Begin light career and college exploration

  • Choose enriching summer opportunities

  • Practice communicating with teachers and counselors to build self-advocacy

Financial Focus

  • Continue conversations about affordability and expectations

  • Learn the basics of financial aid and scholarship types

  • Maintain a savings routine and achievement record

10th Grade: Exploring Possibilities and Laying the Financial Foundation

Sophomore year is a time to deepen involvement and refine habits before junior year demands increase. Planning becomes more intentional while still allowing room for exploration.

Admissions Focus

  • Take the PSAT 10 as low-stakes practice. It is designed for sophomores and does not count for National Merit Scholarship

  • Review SAT and ACT timelines to plan future testing calmly

  • Continue strategic course planning including Honors, AP or Dual Enrollment when appropriate

  • Deepen extracurricular involvement and explore leadership opportunities

  • Explore potential majors or career interests

  • Begin tracking activities in a résumé or portfolio

Financial Focus

  • Use Net Price Calculators to compare realistic college costs

  • Discuss family budget and priorities

  • Identify early scholarship opportunities

  • Continue tracking accomplishments for future applications

11th Grade: Preparing Strategically and Building Readiness

Junior year is often the most academically demanding year. Students balance rigorous coursework, testing, leadership roles and early college planning. Clear structure and consistent oversight stress and prevents last-minute pressure.

Admissions Focus

  • Take the PSAT/NMSQT in junior year. It is typically taken in October and is the qualifying test for National Merit Scholarship consideration (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test)

  • Build a testing plan for the SAT or ACT, usually in the spring of 11th grade

  • Research and visit colleges in person or virtually

  • Create a balanced college list including reach, match and safety schools

  • Strengthen relationships for teacher recommendations

  • Identify essay themes and personal experiences

  • Draft essays and the personal statement over the summer

  • Continue meaningful involvement and leadership

Financial Focus

  • Refine the college list with affordability in mind

  • Learn about FAFSA and CSS Profile requirements

  • Gather financial documents early

  • Create a financial aid and scholarship calendar

12th Grade: Applying with Confidence and Making Informed Decisions

Senior year is about follow-through and informed, thoughtful decision making. Students manage coursework alongside applications, deadlines and important choices about the future.

Fall: Applications and Filing

  • Finalize application strategy and college list

  • Submit applications and essays on time

  • Track portals, transcripts and recommendations

  • Create FSA IDs and file FAFSA and CSS Profile accurately

  • Apply for scholarships and monitor deadlines

Winter and Spring: Review and Decision

  • Stay engaged with colleges and respond to requests

  • Compare admissions offers and financial aid packages side by side

  • Request appeals when appropriate

  • Finalize enrollment and payment plans by May 1

  • Prepare for college life including budgeting, time management and independence

How Coaching and Admissions Counseling Work Together

Academic and Executive Function Coaching supports the gradual development of organization, planning and self-management skills throughout middle and high school. As these skills strengthen, students are better prepared to manage increasing academic demands and approach future planning with confidence.

In Grades 11 and 12, my College Admissions Counseling Program builds on this foundation by overseeing students through the specific steps of the admissions process. Preparation becomes more manageable and more empowering as students learn to stay organized, meet deadlines and make informed academic and financial decisions.

With steady structure and encouragement in place, students remain on track and parents feel reassured knowing the process is developmentally appropriate, planned and carefully managed.
